Keywords:
Schiff bases, cinnamaldehyde derivatives, antimicrobial activity
Since their first synthesis by Hugo Schiff in 1864, Schiff bases containing
imine or azomethine functional groups have been proven to be a special
class of organic compounds due to their wide applications in such important
fields as chemistry, biology, medicine and pharmaceutics

. Schiff bases are
common organic structures that can be easily synthesized through a one-
step synthetic procedure via condensation of aldehydes or ketones with
aromatic or aliphatic amines. For years, Schiff bases have been widely used
as toxic and essential metal sensors, as molecular memory devices and
switches, in non-linear devices, as catalysts in electrochemistry and
magnetochemistry, in asymmetric synthesis and epoxidation, in biomedical
applications and they have also been used extensively as ligands in
coordination chemistry. Moreover, Schiff bases exhibit many different biological
activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, antituberculosis,
herbicidal, anti-HIV, antimalarial, antiproliferative, antiviral and antipyretic
properties

.
From the other side, cinnamaldehyde, a major constituent of cinnamon
oil, is an aromatic compound with a benzene ring and an aldehyde group
attached to an unsaturated C=C bond at both ends. It was found that it has
a wide variety of bioactive properties. Studies on cinnamaldehyde have shown
that it exhibits a broad range of biological activities, such as anticancer,
antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antifungal, mutagenic,
analgesic and antidiabetic properties

.
Taking into account all mentioned, novel azomethines on the basis of o-
methoxycinnamaldehyde and polyamines such as tris(2-aminoethyl)amine
and 2,2′-(ethylenedioxy)bis(ethylamine) were synthesized. The structures of
the synthesized Schiff bases were investigated by
1
H and
13
C NMR and mass
spectroscopy methods as well as elemental analysis. Taking into account
above mentioned broad spectrum of biological activities, the next step of
investigations was the determination of biological activities of newly
synthesized Schiff bases. The biological activity of synthesized azomethines
