Phatic Communion
Phatic Communion is a type of speech in which ties of
union are created by a mere
exchange of words.
The temporal structure of interaction can be divided into three phases: the opening
phase, the medial phase and the closing phase. The opening
phase is a transition from
silence to interaction. The closing phase is a transition from interaction to departure.
A limited set of stereotype phrases of greeting, parting, commonplace remarks about the
weather, and “small-talk” characterizes the marginal phases of interaction.
