Objective: to reinforce saying the cardinal and ordinal numbers from 1 to 31 This is a usual Chain Drill activity.
Activity 4 Listen and write the numbers. Objectives: to practise listening and writing ordinal numbers; to introduce saying the dates STEP 1: Ask the pupils to open their Workbooks and look at the example in Activity 4. Then translate the example. Explain that in English the dates are written as in the left hand of the dividing line and said as in the right hand.
Language Note: We say: the third of June, the twelfth of April but We write: 3 June, 3rd June, June 3rd or 3/6/14 STEP 2: Play the DVD. Explain that now the pupils will listen and fill in the gaps in the left hand of the dividing line according to what they hear in the DVD.
DVD script The fourteenth of January, the twenty-first of March, the twenty-fifth of May, the twenty-second of July, the thirtieth of August, the thirteenth of November.
STEP 3: After that, if time allows, you can ask the pupils to fill in the right hand gaps. If not, the pupils may do it at home as homework.
Activity 5 Work in pairs. Point and say. Objective: to practise saying the dates Ask the pupils to put their pocket calendars on their desks (one calendars is enough for each pair). Explain that Pupil A shows a date on the calendar, for example, 21 in March, Pupil B says the date: “the twenty-first of March”. Then they take turns. You can let the pupils work in such manner for some minutes.
Activity 6a Listen and repeat. Objective: to practise asking and answering questions about dates STEP 1: Draw the pupils’ attention to the speech bubbles. Ask what Zumrad is asking and what Jasur is answering. Elicit the answers. Sum up saying in the mother tongue that Zumrad is asking about today’s date and Jasur is answering accordingly.
STEP 2: Ask the pupils about the real date and help them answer. Then practise the question and the answer with the whole class all together.
