Pupil’s Book, Workbook, the DVD of the book, a table of months onWhat man paper (for Activity 2)
a table of numbers on Whatman paper (for Activity 3a), pocket calendars enough for pairs
Activity 1 Listen and repeat. Objective: to warm up; to learn the poem Play the DVD. The pupils listen and repeat the poem. Look at Unit 10, Lesson 1 Warm up activity for the DVD script.
Activity 2 Work in pairs. Make sentences. Objectives: to revise cardinal and ordinal numbers 1-12; to practise saying the order of months. STEP 1: At first you are recommended to revise the cardinal and ordinal numbers from 1 to 12 together with the pupils. Write the number 1 on the blackboard and ask the class what the ordinal number of 1 is in English. Elicit the best answer and write it next to number 1, etc. as follows:
1 – 1st (the first); 2 – 2nd (the second); 3 – 3rd (the third); 4 – 4th (the fourth); 5 – 5th (the fifth); 6 – 6th (the sixth); 7 – 7th (the seventh); 8 – 8th (the eighth); 9 – 9th (the ninth); 10 – 10th (the tenth); 11 – 11th (the eleventh); 12 – 12th (the twelfth). Explain that both short forms (e.g. 8th) and full forms (e.g. the eighth) are used in English. At the end have the class repeat the numbers in chorus after you.
STEP 2: Hang the Whatman paper on the blackboard on which you have written the following table beforehand.
Ask the pupils to look at the table. Explain that the months in the first column are written in order. In the third column the ordinal numbers are jumbled up. The task is finding the right order of the months and making correct sentences. Show them how to do the task through making the example sentence. Translate the sentence, especially, the word “year”. When everybody has understood what to do, let the pupils make sentences in pairs.
STEP 3: After some minutes, ask the pupils to help you make the sentences all together. Say “February is the”, here wait for the pupils’ help. When they say “third”, continue and finish the sentence, etc.
STEP 4: Now you can ask the pupils to make sentences as a usual Chain Drill activity. For example:
