Activity 3a Say the numbers.
Objective: to introduce the cardinal and ordinal numbers from 1 to 31
STEP 1: Hang the Whatman paper on the blackboard on which you have written the following table beforehand.

STEP 2: Invite the pupils to look at the first column of the table and ask what they have noticed. Elicit answers. Sum up saying that we just add the suffix “th” to the end of the cardinal numbers and in this way make ordinal numbers.
STEP 3: Invite the pupils to look at the second column of the table and ask what they have noticed. Elicit answers. Sum up saying that when we add the suffix “th” to the end of “twenty” the letter “y” changes into “ie”. The ordinal of “twenty-one” becomes “twenty-first”, “twenty-two” – “twenty-second” and “twenty-three” – “twenty-third”. When we add the suffix “th” to “twenty-five”, the letters “ve” turn into “f” in the ordinal number.
STEP 4: After that invite the pupils to look at the third column of the table and ask what they have noticed. Elicit answers. Sum up saying the differences between the spellings of cardinal and ordinal numbers as shown in the table. Also say that we always use the definite article “the” before the ordinal numbers.
STEP 5: After all those have the pupils repeat the cardinal and ordinal numbers after the DVD in chorus.
