E nglish w riter, poet and playw right. H e w as born in 1564 in the little tow n o f
S tratford-upon-A von, about 120 kilom eters from L ondon. H e w as the th ird o f eight
children. Shakespeare w e n t to L ondon to w o rk at th e theatre. He w orked at the thetre
for several years b efo re he began to w rite his ow n plays.
W hen S hakespeare w as 18 he m arried A nne H athaw ay a w om an eight years o ld er
than him self. T hree children w ere born to them . Shakespeare soon becam e a w ell-
k now n w riter in L ondon. H e w as part o f one o f L o n d o n 's m ost popular acting groups.
H is plays w ere often perfo rm ed and published. In 1599 he and som e colleagues
becam e the ow ners o f th eir o w n theatre, the '‘G lobe Theatre"'. Shakespeare w ro te 37
plays that can be d ivided into th ree types: com edies, h isto ries and tragedies.
H is co m ed ies include “T he T am ing o f the S h rew ” and a “M idsum m er N ig h ts
D ream ". His histories told the stories o f E nglish kings, including H enry IV , H enry
VIII, R ichard II and R ich ard III. His tragedies include such w ell-know n plays as
“ R om eo and Ju lie t” , “ O th ello ” , “M acb eth ” , “ K ing L ear” and “ H am let” .

H is w’orks has helped shape w o rld literature and he had a g reat effect on th e E nglish
language. B esides plays, S hakespeare is also fam ous for his poetry. H e w rote m any
poem s called sonnets. T h a t his plays are read and p erform ed often today, hundreds o f
years after his death in 1616, is p ro o f o f his greatness.
