Q185. What are more effective rewards, intrinsic rewards, such as
praise, or extrinsic rewards, such as money?
A. Sample Answer
As a student, I think that extrinsic rewards work the best for two reasons. To start with, I don’t
mind being bribed as a student to do my work well. If I do my work to the standards that are expected
of me, getting a piece of candy or a gift card is a great motivator to me. One time, I worked really
hard to become the number one student academically in my school, and I received two free tickets to
the Spurs Jamboree! It was a great incentive to work even harder. Next, when other students see me
getting all these rewards, they want to get them too. Therefore, they will work harder to try and beat
me, which then in return I will do the same so that they can’t beat me. Giving extrinsic rewards
creates a friendly competition in the classroom that will bring about great results. So next time your
teacher bribes you with a piece of candy or tickets to a show, focus on the task assigned to you and
try to do your best to win that prize! You’ll see how great it feels to be number one at something.
