Q192. Compare the advantages of positive rewards against the
advantages of negative punishments.
A. Sample Answer
When thinking about positive rewards
versus negative punishments, one must think of all the
advantages and disadvantages. I will discuss predominately the advantages of each. For the positive
rewards’
advantages, there is the feeling proud of oneself to begin with. When you receive a gift,
such
as a gift card or money, you will feel happy inside. Also, positive rewards will bring about
repeat actions of the same
behavior, because you will want to obtain that same benefit again. As for
the advantages
of negative punishments, one main one comes to my mind. It is that if we punish
undesirable behavior, then that behavior will be known to the doer, and will eventually stop. For
example, if I am at home and I never clean my room, my mom will threaten me to take away my TV.
When I failed to clean my room, away went my TV for a week. I was angry, but it worked! I always
clean my room now for fear that I will lose my TV again.
As I mentioned previously, there are
advantages to rewarding somebody for good deeds, but there are also advantages for punishing those
who do bad things.
