Q234. Do you agree with the following statement? An eye for an
eye. Why or why not?
A. Sample Answer
Although “an eye for an eye” may seem like an appealing approach, I don’t think it is a practical
philosophy. First of all,
as another old saying explains, two wrongs don’t make a right. No matter
what anyone does to you, you should not retaliate in the same manner.
The satisfaction you may
temporarily feel will soon dissipate and you will most likely feel bad about your childish behavior.
It is better to take alternative steps to solving your problem rather than retaliating in the same way in
which you were wronged. To continue, no one is ever justified in
directly bringing harm onto
someone. It is not your decision to say whether or not the other person suffers. The justice you seek
for an act done against you should always include a third party. That third party will have an
unbiased approach and invoke the appropriate solution to the issue. You don’t have the authority to
directly harm any other being. Thus, I disagree with the statement “an eye for an eye.”
