Q238. At what age is it appropriate to allow a child to stay home
alone?
A. Sample Answer
From my experience, I think the best age to allow a child to stay home alone is thirteen. To begin
with,
at this age, a child has all of the basic skills and knowledge to be safe while at home. For
example, by thirteen, I mastered how to feed myself, take care of my personal hygiene without any
help, and keep the house safe from intruders. I also knew all of the basic information that might be
helpful in an emergency, like my address, where my parents worked, and their phone numbers, among
other things. Secondly, leaving a child who is under thirteen home alone would look bad if something
bad did happen. By this, I mean that if something happened and people found out that you left a child
home alone, you would look like a bad parent. Though a child might have the basic skills required to
be safe at home at a younger age, accidents do happen all the time. Leaving a teenager at home alone
doesn’t sound as scandalous as leaving a child home alone. Those are the two reasons why I think
thirteen is a good age to leave a child home alone.
