selection and combination of means of speech communication in the sphere of thatm or another common, national language, correlative with other similar ways of expression that serve other purposes, perform other functions in the public speech practice of a given people. 1
Each style of language is a more or less stable system at a given stage in the development of the literary language. Language styles are a historical category. This means that they change, develop, appear and disappear. So, for example, the features of oratory in the English literary language have undergone some significant changes in the process of their development. These changes, as will be shown below, are due to general changes in literary English in a certain period of its development; the newspaper style of the English literary language arose by isolating the form of information messages from the journalistic style, etc.
Speech styles are distinguished as certain systems in the literary language, primarily in connection with the purpose of the message. Each speech style has a more or less precise purpose, which determines its functioning and its linguistic features. So, for the newspaper style, the main goal is information, advertising; the purpose of the journalistic style is persuasion, a call to action, an assessment of the facts of reality; the purpose of the business style is to establish the conditions, restrictions and forms of further cooperation of two or more people; the purpose of the style of scientific prose is to prove certain provisions, hypotheses, argumentation, etc.
Each speech style has both general, typical features for a given style, which underlie the selection of this style into an independent * speech style, and private forms of its manifestation. The ratios of the general and the particular in speech styles manifest themselves differently in different periods of development of these styles and within the style system of a given literary language. So, for example, business documents, diplomatic letters and notes, orders and instructions, minutes of parliamentary meetings, etc. are forms of manifestation and existenceof the style of business documents in the English literary language. All of them have something in common that underlies their separation into an independent speech style. 1 However, each of these varieties of business style has its own specific features, in which both the general patterns of this style and the individual features inherent only in this bedding are manifested. Thus, the symbols and abbreviations of military documents reflect both the general patterns of the business style and the features inherent only to this substyle.
The same can be said about other means of the language. Thus, the imagery of speech, characteristic of the style of artistic speech and not characteristic of the style of scientific prose, can be applied in a peculiar way in the latter, without violating the general laws of this style.
The ratio of the general and the particular is especially prominent in the analysis of the individual manner of using the language. From the point of view of the manifestation of the individual in the use of language means, the speech styles of the English literary language allow a significant amplitude of fluctuations. Such styles of speech, such as, for example, the style of official documents, stand on the verge of almost impersonal creativity. The individual manner of expression is almost completely absent here. Indeed, is it possible to see any individual peculiarity in orders, business letters, charters, etc.? The manifestation of the individual in such styles of speech is usually regarded as a violation of the established norms of this literary style of speech. The same can be said about newspaper reports. They, too, show a kind of indifference to the personality of the writer.The Times: Colonel Cyril Banks, Conservative member for Pudsey, Yorkshire, informed his constituents of his decision to renounce the Government Whip and to become an Independent. It was known that Colonel Banks had been very critical of the Government's policy regarding Egypt from the beginning of the Suez Canal crisis. He has made several visits to Egypt in the past two years and last December made an unofficial attempt to start talks between Egypt and Israel. Colonel Banks has taken a special interest in the problem of the Arab refugees.
The Middle East situation was further reviewed by the Cabinet at a meeting yesterday morning. This meeting lasted an hour and a half. The Prime Minister spent much of the day in consultation with Mr. Selwin Lloyd, the Foreign Secretary.
The Foreign Secretary was present at a crowded meeting of the Conservative 1922 Committee at the House of Commons last night. Conservative back benchers stood to cheer him when he arrived. He to the meeting on the situation in the Middle East for about 15 minutes, and afterwards spoke a number of questions. He was again loudly cheered when he left. The most careful analysis of the linguistic form of this message does not make it possible to find here any features that indicate an individual manner of using linguistic means. Any correspondent can write such a note, and the author's surname, which is sometimes placed at the end of such notes, only indicates the responsibility of this person for the information reported. No special individual traits can be found in such reports in the communist press, which, however, differs from the bourgeois press in the greater simplicity of the vocabulary and the syntactic structure in the leading articles. Here is an example of a report from the Daily Worker newspaper: The situation is somewhat different with a variety of journalistic style - newspaper articles. ManifestationWhen the manifestation of the individual becomes a prerequisite and a characteristic feature of style, we are dealing with the style of artistic speech. Here, the absence of the individual actually dissolves it in other styles, removes one of the most essential features of this style. The general patterns of the style of artistic speech lie in the originality of the interpretation of reality, in the generalization and typification of elements of other styles, and, among others, also an obligatory manifestation of the individual.
Consider the typical features of the main speech styles of the modern English literary language.
Artistic speech is a special style of speech that has historically developed in the system of the English literary language, which has a number of common features, also historically variable, and a wide variety of particular features that change depending on the forms of manifestation of this style (sub-style), from the era, from the individual manner of the author.
The style of artistic speech is a complex unity of heterogeneous features that distinguish this style from all other styles of the modern English literary language. The fact that this style allows the use of elements of other styles,
