Functional styles, to avoid confusion with other meanings of the word "style", are sometimes called language genres , functional varieties of language . Each functional style has its own characteristics of using the general literary norm; it can exist both in written and oral form. Traditionally, five main varieties of functional speech styles are distinguished, differing in the conditions and goals of communication in some area of ​​social activity: scientific, official business, journalistic, colloquial, artistic. Recently, a number of scientists have been talking about a religious functional style, the study of which was not welcomed in Soviet times due to the position of the state regarding religion .
