Note:

In the Ethiopic to English section, Ethiopic words are given in Ethiopic script: The ALPHABETICAL ORDER in this section is according to that of the Ethiopic alphabet as given below, namely, beginning with H () and ending with Gw ().Within the letter section, entries are arranged in order of the seven forms or vowel sounds which follow the consonant:

  • First form, a simple short –A;

  • Second Form, a long –U (as in English soon);

  • Third form, a long –Î (as in English sea);

  • Fourth Form, a long –Â (as in English aah!);

  • Fifth Form, a long –E (as in English may, say);

  • Sixth Form: neutral – either no vowel at all- or a very short I, here shown with –ı;
