Abstract. The article deals with the main importance of the system of exercises aimed at acquiring the
lexical aspect of speech of students studying in language faculties. Clearly, indirect and direct learning of
words is one of the issues to be considered when designing a system of vocabulary acquisition. Indirect
vocabulary learning is the learning of a word without any conscious purpose; direct vocabulary learning is the
process of storing information purposefully in memory. As a result, vocabulary learning needs to combine
both indirect and direct learning.
In addition, the article highlights two key factors that affect the effectiveness of the exercises - the
importance of perception and attention. Perception is the process of focusing on any lexical unit. Different
types of exercise also draw students' attention to a specific lexical unit. For example, completing a sentence
based on unknown words or writing new sentences directs students' attention to a specific lexical unit.
Thus, the article concludes that most of the system of exercises on acquiring the lexical aspect of
speech given to students studying in English faculties should be organized on the speech and speech
comprehension, development of speech communication mechanisms, speech skills and various language skills;
help to acquire language materials; to arouse in students the imagination of active real conversation; must have
a logical connection with the activities of learners; reflect students' environment and stimulate them to use the
given words.
