Amino Acid-Derived Hormones 
The 
amino acid-derived hormones
are relatively small molecules that are derived from the 
amino acids tyrosine and tryptophan, shown in Figure 152. If a hormone is amino acid-derived, its 
chemical name will end in “-ine”. The adrenal glands' medulla is where epinephrine and 
norepinephrine are made, and the thyroid gland creates thyroxine as an example of an amino acid-
derived hormone. Melatonin, which controls sleep cycles, is produced and secreted by the pineal 
gland in the brain
