Vesicles can bud from the ER, as we have already mentioned. But where do the vesicles go?
The lipids or proteins in the transport vesicles must be sorted, packaged, and tagged before they arrive
at their destination to ensure they are put in the proper location. The Golgi apparatus, also known as
the Golgi body, is a collection of flattened membranous sacs where lipids
and proteins are sorted,
labeled, packaged, and distributed.
The Golgi apparatus has a releasing face toward the cell membrane on the
side away from the ER and
a receiving face close to the endoplasmic reticulum. The transport vehicles,
which emerge from the ER, move
to the receiving face, unite with it, and then release their contents into the lumen of the Golgi apparatus.
