: Annual Rings 
The vascular cambium's activity produces annual growth rings. Secondary xylem cells have 
a large internal diameter and their primary cell walls are not significantly thickened during the spring 
growing season. This is referred to as spring wood or early wood. The secondary xylem thickens its 
cell walls during the fall, producing late wood (also known as autumn wood), which is denser than 
early wood. This seasonal variation in the ratio of tracheids to vessel elements accounts for a large 
portion of the early and late wood alternation. It causes the growth of an annual ring, which appears 
as a circular ring in the stem's cross section (Figure 104). The age of the tree and the predominant 
climatic conditions throughout each season can be determined by looking at the number of annual 
rings and their characteristics (such as their size and cell wall thickness).

Stem Modifications 
For a specific habitat and environment, some plant species have modified stems (Figure 105). 
A 
rhizome 
is a modified underground stem with nodes and internodes that spreads out horizontally. 
Vertical shoots may arise from the buds on the rhizome of some plants, such as ginger and ferns. 
Corms
are similar to rhizomes, except they are more rounded and fleshy (such as in gladiolus). Corms 
contain stored food that enables some plants to survive the winter.
