The Endoplasmic Reticulum 
The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is made up of numerous interconnected membranous tubules that 
work together to synthesize lipids and modify proteins. However, these two tasks are carried out in various 
locations within the endoplasmic reticulum: 
the rough endoplasmic reticulum
and the 
smooth endoplasmic 
reticulum
, respectively. 
The rough endoplasmic reticulum (
RER
) is so named because the ribosomes attached to its 
cytoplasmic surface give it a studded appearance when viewed through an electron microscope. The 
endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is made up of numerous interconnected membranous tubules that work together 
to synthesize lipids and modify proteins. However, these two tasks are carried out in various locations within 
the endoplasmic reticulum: 
The smooth endoplasmic reticulum (
SER
) is continuous with the RER but has few or no ribosomes on 
its cytoplasmic surface. The SER is involved in the synthesis of lipids, including phospholipids, steroid 
hormones, and carbohydrates as well as the detoxification of drugs and poisons, the metabolism of alcohol, and 
the storage of calcium ions.

Vesicles can bud from the ER, as we have already mentioned. But where do the vesicles go? 
The lipids or proteins in the transport vesicles must be sorted, packaged, and tagged before they arrive 
at their destination to ensure they are put in the proper location. The Golgi apparatus, also known as 
the Golgi body, is a collection of flattened membranous sacs where lipids and proteins are sorted, 
labeled, packaged, and distributed. 
The Golgi apparatus has a releasing face toward the cell membrane on the side away from the ER and 
a receiving face close to the endoplasmic reticulum. The transport vehicles, which emerge from the ER, move 
to the receiving face, unite with it, and then release their contents into the lumen of the Golgi apparatus.
