Abstract:
Among the lands which belonged to caliphate, Fergana and Mawara’un-Nahr were
known as a prosperous regions in terms of underground resources in the Xth century. Iron produc-
tion had a vital importance in Mawara’un-Nahr and the leading iron producing regions were Fer-
gana and Usrushana. Iron tools which were produced in Fergana were so famous that they were
exported as far as Babylon. Copper which was extracted from abundant copper mines of Fergana was
not only used as raw material but also for making goods. Fabric and goods made of fabric produced
in Fergana were sufficient to meet the requirements of the local people and were also exported to the
nomadic Turks as con-fection. In ceramic production, the XI-XIII th centuries were time of real
prosperity. That a rooted and regular craft was settled in the region, that pots and pans were produ-
ced and that tile productions was one of the essential elements of domestic trade were understood
from researches. The skillfully made productions of Fergana’s craftsmen were exported to the eastern
lands through the route Osh-Ozkent-East Turkestan of Silk Road. There were also famous horses of
Fergana among the traded goods. While some Turks settled in the cities, towns and villages of Fer-
gana, some other Turks continued to live as nomads on the mountain foots surrounding the valley
and plateaus. Various kinds of crafts were also vital to the economy of nomadic Turks. However,
craft is conspicuous as individualistic among the Turks.
