Woman characters were always one of the main subjects in literature for centuries. Their dignity, role in society was
viewed from different points, by different authors. But accurate portrait of an accomplished woman couldn’t be compared
so naturally and wonderful as did Jane Austen so far.
Jane Austen, her name is mentioned with great admire and along with the plays of William Shakespeare and the works
of Charles Dickens, her novels are thought to be among the most beloved books of Western literature. Her style of writing,
description and the problems that she touched in the stories are actual till nowadays. Description of nature, portray and
image of the characters, descriptive representation of the situations in the novels are so natural that one can abandon and
absolutely concentrate on the story and imagine the living in 19
th
century. And, most astounded is that she has ability at
capturing the essence of human passion and feeling, and everyone is always meaningfully occupied.
Pride and Prejudice (1813) was in Austen’s lifetime her most popular novel, and it is told to be the author’s personal
favorite. The novel describes the second half of the 18
th
century and some parts of 19
th
century realism. Her plots highlight
the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. The novel mainly focuses on
particular British society and about the society’s restrictive standards for women. However, the novel allows us to see and
clarify woman portrays of that time and helps us to understand how they explored their own identities and problems, their
own national concerns. It’s not only a love story but a social novel incorporating different types of woman characters, their
modesty and achievements.
