editor. Almost, whole his life passed in destitute-he had no friends, and was in financial trouble. He was a witness of several
deaths of dears that made him become a genius as an author.
Edgar Allan Poe was an odd and scary writer himself. People throughout the history of literature have often wondered
why his works were so fascinatingly different and unusual. Obviously, it was not the result of an insane mind. They came
from a dramatic and miserable life. He was unhappy man, he died unappreciated. Evidently, his private life affected his
works in a great way by all means. In order to comprehend his writings background of Poe must be known surely. Through
glancing at Edgar Alan Poe`s life, we will understand what motivated him to write and what the meaning was behind these
works. All the women in his life seemed to pass away. Many died of Tuberculosis and those who did not die still seemed to
die. These deaths played a crucial effect on his style. Men were shown as "a bad guy". Several times there were obscure
situations surrounding the deaths in the works.
Virginia Eliza Clemm Poe was his wife whose disease and eventual death had a substantial effect on his works. His
wife`s health drove Poe into a depression. In the correspondence to a friend he described his mental state "Each time I felt
all agonies of her death-and at each accession of the disorder I loved her more dearly and clung to her life with more
desperate pertinacity. But I am constitutionally sensitive-nervous in a very unusual degree. I became insane, with long
intervals of horrible sanity". It turned Poe to despondent and alcohol to cope. Consequently, we can come across torturing
from disease or dying women in his works frequently.
The most famous works which reflect his personal drama based on Virginia`s death are "Annabel Lee", "The Raven",
"Eleonora", "To one in paradise", "Lenore", "Ulalume" and "Ligeia". The story of the Raven tells of a lonely man who has
lost his one true love Lenore. He describes her as "the most lovely dead ever died so young!" In "Annabel Lee" depicts the
death of a beautiful woman who marries young. The narrator not only loves Annabel, but also worships her. A poem
"Ulalume" written by Poe like a few other poems focuses on the narrator`s loss of his beloved due to the death. "Lenore" a
poem is also a reflection of the same theme. Unlike most of Poe`s poems related with dying women, "Lenore" shows the
possibility of meeting in paradise. "Ligeia" is a short story where an intelligent raven-haired woman is depicted. After her
death, the narrator marries the Lady Rowena and she dies as well.
Poe left Richmond on 27 September, presumably planning a stay in New York to settle his affairs before returning to
Richmond to be married. Nothing is known of what happened to him over the next week, but on 3 October he was identified
at a Baltimore tavern, in dingy trousers and crumpled shirt. He was admitted to the Hospital of Washington Medical
College. He died at three o'clock on Sunday morning, by most accounts the victim of a lethal amount of alcohol.
His detective fiction and his macabre treatment of the uncanny and the disgusting pervade twentieth-century popular
culture. Among the foundations of modernism is the analytic attitude he brought to literature, his determined separation of
the man who suffers and the artist who creates.
