Azomethines, which can be synthesized by condensation of aliphatic or
aromatic amines with carbonyl compounds, were discovered by a Noble
Prize winner German chemist Hugo Schiff in 1864. These unique compounds
are one of the frequently used organic compounds in industry. The
application areas of mentioned marvellous compounds include pigments and
dyes industry, catalysts, substrates in organic synthesis, polymer stabilizers
and pharmaceuticals. [1-4]
Ortho-vanillin based azomethines are multifunctional ligands that can be
used to design an infinite number of potential industrially important materials.
This type of compounds becomes very popular in coordination chemistry for
the reason that it can form complexes that have high stability with most
metals. The reason of it is caused by the presence of nitrogen (N) of the
azomethine group along with two oxygen (O) atoms of hydroxyl and methoxy
groups. Various investigations of ortho-vanillin based azomethines and its
metal complexes revealed that the biological activity of them includes such
activities as antibacterial, antifungal, antioxidant, anticancer and so on. On
the other side, it was found that compounds containing ortho-vanillin moiety
also act as a weak inhibitor of tyrosinase, displaying both co-mutagenic and
antimutagenic properties in Escherichia coli. In addition to it, several
investigations performed by the pharmaceutical industry allowed to predict
the mechanism of interaction of these compounds with DNA. Many efforts
were done in the possibility of using ortho-vanillin based azomethines as a
catalyst, polymers, dye analogues and some positive results were
obtained.[1-4]
Taking into account all mentioned, new azomethine containing ortho-
vanillin moiety was synthesized and its biological activity was studied. Novel
azomethine was synthesized by the condensation reaction of brominated
ortho-vanillin with 1,2-bis(2-aminoethoxy)ethane. The structure of the
synthesized novel compound was investigated by
