The Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki (WITT) is a quality Government-owned tertiary education
institution based in New Zealand’s premier oil and gas region. WITT offers courses from certificate to degree
level across a wide range of areas, including business, nursing, hospitality, Maori, humanities, media, art,
electrical, engineering, automotive, welding, carpentry, architecture, computing, social sciences and agriculture.
Specialist courses for the oil and gas industry are also provided. This includes the certificate in process
engineering (oil and gas) which seeks to develop students’ knowledge and skills for entry level employment
as Process Operators in the oil and gas and chemical industries. The course covers an introduction to process
operations, safety and risk management, basic chemistry and thermodynamics, petrochemical processes,
petroleum projects, gas testing and the other operational and generic skill sets. It has been designed with input
from the Petroleum Skills Association of NZ and is “industry based”, with a significant amount of sponsored work
placement where students gain a broad exposure to the local industry.
