Learning new vocabulary not necessarily through texts such as watching short videos, online internet
video clips, television programs [8]–[11] can boost the vocabulary to the same extent as reading [8],
[11] since students can be more motivated to learn through other sources of information.
In the modern world where learners are exposed to an immense amount of content through various
internet platforms and streaming services, the benefits of which are hard to overlook, it becomes a
necessity for a teacher to enable learners to use their favorite platforms to enrich their English
vocabulary and to facilitate obtaining the desired speed of a foreign language acquisition.
Among the services available, the TEDx website should be primarily named as a great source of
learning and entertainment. Given Russian students’ general passion for this famous non-profit, it
does not come as a problem for teachers to base a certain range of lexical exercises on textbooks’
subject-related talks. Possible tasks range from merely noting down new vocabulary chunks while
viewing and their contextual meanings to producing similar monologues on the talks’ topics and
presenting them in front of the class. Students’ interest-related tasks are bound to be taken positively
and the results of such activities are quickly visible. Ted Talks are successfully incorporated into the
units of the Keynote Proficient by National Geographic, a part of Cengage Learning. The pleasurable
activity of a Ted Talk viewing being an opening task of every unit in their main English textbook,
students quickly engage in the process of learning and become more enthusiastic to discuss the topic
area of a unit.
In addition to the Keynote Proficient being a part of the 3rd year students’ curriculum, another type of
activity based on the popular non-profit lectures is organized by the teaching staff of MGIMO
University. An event of a format similar to Ted Talks lectures is held monthly at MGIMO, which offers
the university students as well as some guest speakers to share their ideas worth spreading within the
university community. Every month, around 80 viewers represented by the university students and
teaching staff welcome 8–10 speakers who are previously chosen by the organizers’ team regarding
the relevance of their topic and their English language competence. Those in need of extra language
practice are provided a chance to hone their linguistic skills during a number of rehearsals, where
some cases of linguistic inaccuracies are discussed, and some necessary presentation techniques are
given extra attention. After a year’s work on the project, it is possible to highlight the primary benefits
of such an event, the main of which appear to be the increase in the students’ engagement in both
learning process and extracurricular activities, their wish to learn and employ more sophisticated
vocabulary chunks in their language practice lessons, the learners’ desire to improve their public
speaking skills that can subsequently be demonstrated to a large audience on a monthly basis. The
overall level of the students’ involvement in the process of foreign language acquisition is observed to
be an increased one as 73% of the students have reportedly improved performance in their English
language lessons over a year under consideration, according to their university academic ratings.
