Investigation of Applicability of Carbon Nanotubes on Adsorption Operations
The aim of this study is to examine a variety of chemicals adsorption with an advanced technology products carbon nanotubes from the aqueous media.
This project has two parts. In the first part, adsorption of different organic acids by carbon nanotubes from aqueous solutions was studied. Carboxyllic acids are biotechnological substances that used in many industries extensively. Therefore production and seperation of carboxylic acids from product mixtures are important scientific and economical problems. Citric acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid and glycolic acid have been used in this study as an organic acid. Carboxylic acids are important biotechnological substances. Experimental data of carboxylic acids, which are gotten from aqueous solution, were obtained.
Hydroxy carboxylic acid solutions having different initial concentration were prepared and the adsorption activity was obtained with constant amount of nanotubes at 25, 35 and 45 oC. When the initial concentration and temperature increased, adsorption activity has decreased.
In the second part of the project, the adsorption of heavy metals ( cadmium, nickel ) from wastewater was studied. Nickel and cadmium sulfate solutions were prepared and optimum amount of carbon nanotubes was determined with using different amounts of
carbon nanotubes.
