Interpetation of Shallow Seismic Data From Marmara Sea Entrance of The Strait of Çanakkale

In this thesis, it is aimed to evaluate the seismic data gathered from the survey done by the Office of Navigation, Hydrography and Oceanography (ONHO) connected to Turkish Naval Forces in the shelf area and Sarkoy Canyon placed in the opening of the Dardanelles (Canakkale) Strait towards the Marmara Sea.

In the light of this seismic stratigraphic evaluation, it is designated that in that area there are four seismic units placed on a Pre-Miocene basement. As a result of previous surveys done in here and the continental geology, these units are sequenced from the bottom to the top as Unit 1, Unit 2, Unit 3 and Unit 4. Unit 1 is determined to be submarine continuation of the Late Miocene old units which are seen widespreadly in the continental geology of both of the shores of the Dardanelles Strait. Unit 2, which signalizes a low energy area due to its parallel internal reflection, has settled in the exit of the Dardanelles Strait to the Marmara Sea along with in the deep water basin of the Marmara Sea in the period before the Later Glacial epoch or more previous interglacial epoches. Unit 3 takes place as a cannel fill within buried canyon placed on basement towards the Marmara Sea. Also, this unit is distinguished as delta deposits because of its sigmoidal-oblique inner reflection under shelf plain in southeast hillside of Sarkoy Canyon. Unit 4 composes the youngest unit on work area consisted of recent sea deposits which have parallel inner reflection.

Reflection surfaces over seismic cross sections have been detected as deformed throughout some zones and these strain zones are interpreted such as faults. As a result of this survey, some of these faults are determined as strike-slip faults with compression component because of uplifts along the folds and fault zones following faults. Effects of these faults have not been seen on Unit 3 and Unit 4. As a consequence, it is thought that these faults have lost their activity nowadays. In addition to these strike-slip faults with compression component, strike-slip faults which haven’t got compression component but have an influence arriving up to seabed have been discovered on survey area.

The data in hand show that the development of Sarkoy Canyon and the shelf plain comes into existence as a result of the evolution of a wide basin including the survey area and most probably, also Erdek Gulf. This evolution begins with a developed basin located on the common surface of Late Miocene aged units, which are called as Unit 1, and Pre-Miocene aged units placed at the bottom of these Late Miocene units. This basin which is developed through the area geographically containing the borders of Erdek Gulf has been filled with thick sea deposit stack, which has parallel reflection, called as Unit 2.

Unit 3 has settled down as a canal filling and a delta deposit in the canal placed on the exit of the Dardanelles Strait to the Marmara Sea and above the shelf plain which became a mainland according to the fall of sea level within Later Glacial epoch. At the last stage of the evolution of this region; the survey area has gone under water because of the rising sea level in the period that after Later Glacial epoch, and by the control of current oceanographic dynamics, recent sea deposits named as Unit 4 have accrued in the area. In this evolution model, the structural elements observed on the seismic data have resulted in significant changes on the basic morphology of the basin and on the geometry of sedimentary area associated to the basin.
