The Influence of new Generation Plasticizers on Mortars Produced by Fly Ash
Blending materials, are organic or inorganic chemical materials used for improving properties of concrete and/or mortars. Plasticizers are chemical admixtures used widely due to their solubility in water, reducing W/C ratio and increasing strengths. Fly-ashes are, mineral blending materials and can increase the strengths due to their reactive silica contents and decrease permeability of concrete and/or mortars.
In this study, the influence of three different types of new generation plasticizers Naphthalene, Sulfonate, Vinilcopolymer, Modified Polymer, on the strength and durability properties of mortars and their interaction with fly ash is investigated. The aim of this investigation is to develop a methodology for producing economical, high performance mortars. For this purpose, portland cement (CEM I 42.5) blended with %0 (control), 15, 25 and 35 fly ash was used for producing mortars with 0% (control) and 0,5% plasticizer of three different plasticizers from different sources. The TS EN 196 – 1 standard fresh mortars were tested for unit mass and flow; hardened mortar specimens were tested at 7th, 28th and 56th days for capilarity, flexural and compressive strengths.
The results show that there is an insignificant decrease in unit mass of all mortars with increasing fly ash contents. However, workability of the mortars increased with increasing fly ash content. The mortar specimens containing modified polimer plasticizers had the highest flow, and higher flexural and compressive strengths.
However, the addition of fly ash resulted in a significant decrease in rates of flexural and compressive strength gain, nevertheless the strength gain continued. Especially, the 56-day flexural and compressive strengths were high. Similarly, the 56-day coefficients of capilarity absoption were 35% - 50% of the 7th day values.
