Electrometallurgical Production of Metallic Copper and Copper-Zinc Alloy Powders and Optimization of their Production Conditions
Copper and copper-zinc alloy powders are widely used in many industrial areas because of their high electrical and thermal conductivity, good corrosion resistance and formability properties.
In production of copper powders, the effect of the production parameters listed below were studied on the morphology.
Current Density: 175, 200, 250 and 300 mA/cm2
Concentration of copper ion: 5, 10 and 20 g/L
Rotational speed of the cathode: 140, 550 and 1100 rpm
Temperature: 30, 45 and 60°C
The current efficiency values of copper powders produced in a rotating cylindrical cathode cell ranged from 70 to 100 %, which correspond to the specific energy consumption values of 2.72 to 4.10 kWh/kg Cu.
“Response Surface Methodology” experimental design method was used in all experiments carried out to produce electrolytic Cu-Zn alloy powders. In production of Cu-Zn powder, the effect of the production parameters listed below were studied on alloy composition, current efficiency and morphology.
Current Density: 75, 100 125, 150 and 175 mA/cm2
Cu/Zn mole ratio: 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9
Stirring speed: 0, 125, 250, 375 and 500 rpm
Temperature: 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 °C
Electrolytic Cu-Zn alloy powders in different composition including some commercial ones were obtained in the current efficiency range of 68.5 to 99.4 %, which correspond to the specific energy consumption range of 2.74 to 4.15 kWh/kg alloy.
