Rapidly growing application of non-biodegradable polyethylene
terephthalate (PET), a commercially important group of plastic material, in
food and non-food packaging, high strength fiber production has elevated its
consumption to extremely high levels over the past decades. While in the
whole USA accumulated plastic waste formed 35.68 million tons in 2018, the
share of plastic waste was estimated to be 300,000 tons in the same year in
Azerbaijan considering both countries’ population and industrial production
power. On the other hand, petroleum-based polyols and isocyanates are
conventionally used to produce rigid polyurethane (PUR) foams, which are
highly effective insulation materials for the automotive industry, buildings and
other sectors (Suh, Paark and Yoon, 2000). In terms of sustainability,
environmental and economic aspects, recycling PET wastes to produce
polyols and PUR is an essential issue for preserving resources, reducing the
dependence of PUR on petroleum resources, and decreasing the number of
pollutants.
