perpendicularly, instead there is angle between axis of the well and normal
to the aimed formation plane. In these case, by penetrating dipping formation
vertical and wells drilled directionally both penetrate into horizontal formation.
These types of wells are named slanted wells which are very commonly used
but there is only one research related to their completion performance.
There was a study conducted by Roemershauser and Hawkins related
to producing slanted wells with steady state flow.
In their study it was
considered that there is a circular reservoir of finite extent and figured out
that well productivity increases with fully penetrating slant. The increment trend
of productivity indicates the negative skin value. However, for unsteady-state
performance of slanted wells there are not enough information and studies.
The objective of this research is to derive equation for unsteady-state
flow created by formation damage from the data derived from graphs of
pressure against time and angle, with the help of which it will be possible to
evaluate well condition and whether there is a need for stimulation or not.
The equation of pseudoradial flow should be a function of both an angle of
slanted well and radial distance.
Process during which oil, gas, water bearing formation flow capacity is
blocked is known as formation damage
and can occur from the very
beginning till the end of well life. Invasion of solid particles and foreign fluids
into the formation decreases the permeability which is formation damage.
Pressure drop which occurs near the wellbore is called “skin”. In this report
slanted wells analysis and the formation damage created by them are the
major aims. Slanted well drilling is special application of directional drilling
where drill angle starts at surface without drilled vertical wellbore. Deviated
wells are used in the reservoirs where vertical to horizontal ratio is relatively
high and there is possibility of water or/and gas coning. Reservoirs with heavy
oil reservoirs,
coal bed methane, channel sand are,
in other words where
reservoirs are economically inaccessible are candidates for horizontal and
slanted drilling. With the help of slant drilling it is possible to reach access to
more than 20 wells from the single drilling offshore rig and it minimizes the
damage to marine environment.
In directional drilling the well is started to be drilled firstly vertically and
then after certain depth deviate horizontally (at angle usually below 70
°
)to
the aimed zone, whereas in slanted wells drill angle starts at surface without
drilled vertical wellbore . The slanted well is used for production from subsea
reservoirs which are recharged form other flows (vertical and horizontal). The
advantage of slanted well is that there are no theoretically based limits in the
number of drilled slanted wells.
There are some main aims in drilling slanted wells which are written below:
1. In order to increase the length of the exposed zone by drilling through
hydrocarbon zone
