Repression of historians. Not once in world history have historians been subjected to persecution and repression during the Soviet era. Its first and most active phase was in the 1920s and 1930s. Actually, the main work was carried out to urge the historians hold their tongues. How many historians were subject to persecution and repression? There is no statistical information about this fact.
The phase of spiritual and physical repression reduced the number of historians. In the 1930s, hundreds of researchers were questioned under the title "case of historians". Dozens of them were assassinated or killed in the process. In fact, two-third of more than 200 historians of the Red Professors' Institute suffered political repression.

Salamzade (1907-1937), Bilandarli (1905-1937), A.Mammadov, as well as non-azerbaijanian historians B.N. Tikhomirov (1898-1937), A.S.Bukspan (1898-1937) and J. Gubaidullin (1887-1937).

Such physical and moral terror continued in Azerbaijan in later periods. The suicide of the famous public scientist Heydar Huseynov (1908-1950) was the result of such terror. As the ideological use of the history, the moral terror of historians rose to a new level in the 1970s.

The content of the book "Azerbaijan in the VII-IX centuries" by Z.Bunyadov, which had been already translated into the Azerbaijani language was destroyed in the printing house in 1970.
At the October Plenum of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Azerbaijan (1971), the main direction of the moral blow was determined. It was stated in the plenum that "Z. Bunyadov, a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Republic, Professor M. Ismayilov and S. Aliyarov, an associate professor of the university, made a number of gross errors in assessing historical facts". It is clear that the presentation of the issue in this way was the result of a renewal of Soviet state policy in Azerbaijan. But one fact deserves special attention.

In the period following 1971, the named historians continued their activities in the field of science. The validity and merit of their original scientific findings were later acknowledged. However, not everyone was fortunate enough to pass this exam: there were those who were oppressed, humiliated, exiled, or awarded for betrayal and distortion of the history... Unlike the natural sciences, the object and subject of the history are almost the same, that is, people learn from and among themselves. This allows the history to be distorted. Most historians try to be more impartial preferring honesty and fairness in history, while others try to distort and falsify it on political, material, and other subjective terms.
