K. Shukurov. Introduction to History. Theoretical and methodological problems of Azerbaijan History. (4)

Division of sources into groups
According to this view, 1) the sources developed in local nonmaterial environment become a special subject-matter and undergo comprehensive and systematic analysis 2) Foreign sources related to Azerbaijan history have been studied by the native historians and source study experts, and are the subject-matters of the source study in the very country (Armenia, Georgia, Russia, etc). Since they have certain evolution features, it is scientifically more effective to conduct integrated review. Notably, it is preferrable to give a brief summary of the sources of Azerbaijan history according to their languages.
Based on the foregoing, let’s divide the written sources of Azerbaijan history into following groups:
Azerbaijani sources: Albanian (Caucasus) sources (composed of the sources in the Albanian (Caucasian) language and Albanian sources in the Armenian language); Sources in Azerbaijani Turkish; Sources in the Persian, Russian, and other languages;
Foreign sources: а) Eastern cuneiform, Armenian, Georgian, Persian (Iran), Arabic, Turkish, etc., b) European-Greek-Latin, (antique), Russian, English, French, German, Italian, etc.

Groups of written sources of Azerbaijan history
Azerbaijani sources and their division according to the languages

These sources are of special importance in the study of the history of Azerbaijan. They are relevant to the so-called "self-description in modern historiography", that is, we, as a citizen of this country, recognize sorrowful and joyful events in the history of Azerbaijan, and describe our history and people representing it from our perspective. Thus, we may easily differentiate the sources in native Albanian or in the Azerbaijani language and those translated into Azerbaijani from Arabic, Persian and Russian languages. It is to note that, there are Azerbaijan sources in other languages as well.
