K. Shukurov. Introduction to History. Theoretical and methodological problems of Azerbaijan History. (4)

Ethnographic sources

Ethnographic sources have made and continue to make an invaluable contribution to the enrichment of historical knowledge. The data obtained as a result of direct observations on the economic life of peoples, their material and spiritual culture, forms of folk art, etc.. constitute the main part of ethnographic sources.

Nation’s traditions, customs and ceremonies, holidays, religious beliefs, describe the history. They allow us to trace the development of history, to follow it up. Thus, the study of the life of human communities (Iroquois, etc.) have resulted in the solution of important problems in human history which were described neither in material nor in written sources.
The ethnographic group of Azerbaijani historical sources is also noteworthy. The ethnography of Azerbaijan has achieved great results in collecting and researching them, as well as considering them as historical sources.

In fact, sometimes historical studies written on the basis of historical sources which they refer to and do not reach the modern period play the role of historical sources.
