Abstract.
Tensor calculus is an effective mathematical tool widely used in geometry, physics, analytical
mechanics, mechanics of deformable media and other fields of natural science. Currently, there are many books
devoted to tensor calculus. In most of them, the theory of tensors is presented in the traditional "component"
form, when a tensor is identified with the set of its components. Although such an approach has certain
advantages, it hides the geometric and physical meaning of the tensor as an integral invariant object, regardless
of the choice of coordinate system. A more modern interpretation treats tensors as elements of a linear space
obtained by special multiplication of vector spaces. This approach, called direct or non-coordinate tensor
calculations, in particular, adequately reflects the essence of the basic concepts and concepts of continuum
mechanics, and therefore the theory of elasticity, fluid mechanics, theory of plasticity, etc. well adapted to their
problems. In the article, the tensor calculus and its characteristics are examined and involved in the analysis.
