FOREWORD AND PREMISE
The inspiration to do this manual is to give the saints knowledge of how to please our LORD and
what to do in the times we are now living. We are to understand our times and know what to do.
NIV
1 Chronicles 12:32 men of Issachar, who understood the times and knew what
Israel should do-- 200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;
NIV
Luke 12:54 He said to the crowd: "When you see a cloud rising in the west,
immediately you say, 'It's going to rain,' and it does.
55
And when the south wind blows,
you say, 'It's going to be hot,' and it is.
56
Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the
appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you do not know how to interpret
this present time?
The times we are living in are characterized by an increasing acceptance of unrighteous living as
defined by the Bible. Homosexuality is being represented as normative. Abortion is sanctioned
by law. Euthanasia is sanctioned by law in at least one state. Marriage has been redefined to
include marriage between two men or two women in one state. We are sanctioning a man and a
woman living together outside of marriage as socially acceptable behavior. These abominations
to the LORD are a few examples of how our generation has drifted away from our inherent
responsibility to the LORD we serve and his name we have taken upon ourselves. Our
generation is growing increasingly unrighteous and hostile towards Christianity. We are
approving belief and behavior the LORD will judge.
Our times call for the Church not only to be righteous by belief in Jesus’ death, resurrection, and
lordship over the heavens and earth, but also to live righteously in every day life by being
obedient as commanded by Jesus Christ in Matthew 28:20.
Is Teaching Obedience Legalism?
Legalism is a terrible sin, but teaching obedience is not legalism. Salvation comes entirely by
the grace of God. It is important to note, however, that just as we are righteous in Christ by
grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 5:1-2; Hebrews 10:14), so in the same way do we
live out our righteousness: by grace through faith (2 Corinthians 12:9; Hebrews 4:16; 10:14;
Galatians 2:20). Eternal life and abundant life are both experienced by grace through faith.
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesian Church that we are saved by grace through faith, not by
works (Ephesians 2:8,9). The Apostle also wrote the Corinthian church: “The only thing that
counts is obeying His commands” (1 Cor 7:19). This makes it clear that the Christian cannot be
saved eternally by obeying the commands of Christ, but can obey the commands of Christ
because he is saved by grace through faith.
- 2 -
We resist unrighteousness by living righteously. We find financial security by living
righteously. We live in God’s blessing and allow God to bless our families, churches, cities, and
nation by living righteously.
It is my hope to enable each individual, household, and church to have a tool to teach everyone
to obey everything our Lord Jesus commanded. This manual has been done to provide such a
tool to the Lord’s servants.
NIV
Psalm 94:10 Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches man
lack knowledge?
NIV
Proverbs 17:11 An evil man is bent only on rebellion; a merciless official will be sent
against him.
NIV
Psalm 12:8 The wicked freely strut about when what is vile is honored among men.
NIV
Proverbs 28:4 Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, but those who keep the
law resist them. (Law is the translation of the Hebrew word, “Torah”, which can be
translated, “the instruction of God”.
NIV
Proverbs 29:18 Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but blessed
is he who keeps the law. (see Proverbs 28:4 for “law”)
NIV
Proverbs 30:5 "Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge
in him.
NIV
Proverbs 10:29 The way of the LORD is a refuge for the righteous, but it is the ruin
of those who do evil.
NIV
Matthew 6:33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things
will be given to you as well.
Tips on how to use this manual profitably:
• Learn one command each week as a family and apply it in as many ways as the
Scripture in the manual does.
• Make a command card or cards for the week and put in prominent places to
remind you to obey.
• Read through the entire list of commands once each month on a daily schedule
(i.e. three or four each day).
• Teach them to your children, like a mother and father teach household commands
to their children.
• Make sure each of you who teach knows well the power they have or need to have
to obey the commands.
• Make sure each of you who teach to obey knows that acceptance by God is not
gained except by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8,9).
- 3 -
• Do not give up learning these and practicing them. Daily practice over the years
yields an increasingly great return – just as saving a little money at interest over
the years earns increasingly more in later years because of compound interest.
• Expect the Lord Jesus Christ, who is in you, to give you success.
Help build a wall of righteousness around your home, your church, and your community by
learning and obeying these commands, so that your light may shine bright and that many would
be drawn to the true light.

INTRODUCTION TO THE COMMANDS
Obedience to the commands of Christ is how we experience abundant life and display His
splendor to a lost and dying world. The following chapters will help each of us be motivated and
encouraged to be and do what He has already empowered us to be and do. Read chapters 1 – 4
and begin to learn and practice the commands listed in chapters 5 and 6. It is necessary to read
each verse and the command will be obvious. It will be necessary to read carefully and ask the
Lord to help you understand what you are commanded to do with a few of the commands. Most
of the commands are very clear. We should always understand the commands within the context
of the paragraph, book, New Testament, or Old Testament.
These commands of Christ apply to children, parents, friends, employers, and employees, to
every area of our lives. The command to reconcile sin-infested relationships applies child to
parent, parent to child, friend to friend, to all people relationships. We are responsible to obey
God’s command regardless of someone else’s attitude or behavior. When we are persecuted for
being a follower of Jesus Christ, we rejoice and are glad even if it has no apparent effect on the
persecutor.
Living a life of obedience to Christ’s commands is living a righteous life (Romans 6:16), not a
self-righteous life. We can only obey by faith (Galatians 2:20) using the grace He has given us
(2Corinthians 12:9). Living a life of obedience is living a life of love, expressing the love of
God in the same way Jesus did (1John 5:2-3; John 5:19, 30, 36; John 8:28-29; John 14:31).
It is very important to never give up. Always try again. If you fail to obey and choose to sin, do
not give up. Stop. Confess your sin to the Lord (1 John 1:9). Receive His forgiveness and begin
again to obey trusting the Lord to fulfill your act of faith with His power (1Thessalonians 1:11).
Trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus but to trust and obey.
