: Organizing Life on Earth
All life on Earth evolved from a common ancestor. Biologists map how organisms are related
by constructing phylogenetic trees. In other words, a "tree of life" can be built to show how and when
various organisms evolved, as well as the connections between them, as shown in Figure 69. You'll
notice that the three domains of Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya all diverge from a single point before
repeatedly branching. The fact that plants and animals, including humans, are on a small branch in
this diagram indicates
how recently these groups, in
comparison to other groups, evolved.
