: Types of Root Systems
There are two kinds of root systems (Figure 92). Dicots have tap roots, whereas monocots
have fibrous roots. A
tap root system
has a main root that grows down vertically, and from which
many smaller lateral roots arise. Dandelions are a good example; when these weeds are pulled, their
tap
roots frequently break off, and the remaining root can grow another shoot.
The soil is deeply
penetrated by a tap root system. In contrast, a
fibrous root system
is located closer to the soil surface
and forms a dense network of roots that also helps prevent soil erosion (lawn
grasses are a good
example, as are wheat, rice, and corn). Some plants have both fibrous roots and tap roots. While plants
growing in areas with plenty of water are likely to have shallower root systems, plants growing in dry
areas frequently
have deeper root systems
