1.3. Requirements for mechanical engineering materials 
93% of metals used in industry in the world are ferrous metals . 
Black metals are mainly used in all constructions, machines and mechanisms. 
Therefore, the technical growth of each country is expressed by how much ferrous 
metals are melted. 
The remaining metals and their alloys belong to the group of non-ferrous metals. 
Among the non-ferrous metals, industrially important are Copper-Si, Aluminum-Al, 
Magnesium-Mg, lead-Rv, zinc-Zn, tin, etc., which are of technical importance. 
Since non-ferrous metals are expensive, the industry tries to use ferrous metals 
that can replace them as much as possible. 
In addition to the non-ferrous metals mentioned above, chromium Cr in industry, 
nickel Ni, manganese Mn, molybdenum Mo, cable So, titanium T is also used. These 
metals are mainly additional materials to improve the properties of the main material, 
to give it certain properties. Example: V, W, Ti and So are used in making cutting 
instruments. 
We call all the above metals technical metals . Platinum, gold, sand and other 
metals are called rare metals. 
The properties of the most common and widely used metal alloys in industry and 
technology are much higher than the properties of metals. Hard, demanding alloys with

various properties are obtained. Of the common metals, only copper and aluminum are 
widely used, which are used to make electrical wires and other details. 
Among the non-metallic chemical elements, the non-metallic elements that play 
the most important role in industry are oxygen, carbon, nitrogen, are hydrogen, 
phosphorus and sulfur. 
In the technique, nitrogen compound NH 
3 
-ammonia gas is used to harden the 
surface of steel, nitrogenization. Oxygen is used in industry for welding and cutting 
metals, blast furnaces and converters to speed up the metal production process. 
Silicon Si. It is used in obtaining various metal alloys, silicon carbide SiC is used 
in grinding and polishing of metals. 
Sulfur C is very small in cast iron and steel. 
Carbon S diamond, graphite is found in coal. 
The properties of steel and cast iron depend on the amount and state of carbon. (Free, 
i.e. in the form of graphite, mixed with iron , in the form of cementite) 
Phosphorus R combines rapidly with many metals and is present in all carbon 1 
compounds of iron. Phosphorus and sulfur are harmful elements in steel.
