There is
similar importance of compaction and cementation in the
destruction of porosity in sandstones of Balakhany suites in Yasamal
anticline. Additionally, the study of the impact of calcite and clay quantities
on reservoir properties has been carried out. The increase in calcite and clay
fractions that feel the pore spaces within the reservoir is accompanied by a
reduction in porosity and permeability. Clay presence has a greater impact
on reservoir quality in terms of reduction of the above-mentioned parameters
as calcite-rich sandstones create secondary porosity through the dissolution
process. Sandstones of the Balakhany VIII and the Balakhany VI subunits
observed in the outcrops of Yasamal anticline are divided into unconsolidated
with minor calcite composition (up to 15 %), consolidated with calcite-rich
composition (up to 20%), and overconsolidated with high calcite composition
(40-50%) sandstones. The unconsolidated type sandstones are observed
entire the structure, consolidated type of sandstones in southern-east limb,
over-consolidated sandstones are distributed in the northern-east limb of the
anticline, extending approximately 2 km (Zeynalov et all, 2017). Braided fluvial
sandstones of the Balakhany VI subunit and upper portion of the Balakhany
VIII subunit are potential reservoirs with medium-fine-grained textures, lesser
degree for amalgamation, and internal diagenetic heterogeneities.
Diagenetic heterogeneities of sandstones of these subunits directly impact
reservoir quality due to compositional variations of calcite minerals.
