15. Prospects and challenges of using AI in teaching ESP and special translation

(Abstract)
Today, educational practices are modified in accordance with the demands of the industrial and
economic environment. Master's programs “Translation and Intercultural Communication” and
"Computational Linguistics" designed at Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University
take into the main educational trends and innovative practices. This article gives a thorough
analysis of the curricula of the courses and highlights the relevant topics to be studied such as:
“Comparative analysis of programming languages”, “Basic professional competencies of a
specialist in computational linguistics”, “New capabilities of neural networks (on the example of
GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) and GPT-4)” and others. Today, students are much
more exacting and discerning than they were in the past because they are aware of the resources
that make the learning process more interesting. Applying new educational practices and up-to-
date materials in teaching ESP and special translation can significantly improve learning
outcomes and boost motivation. The author makes the conclusion that the involvement of AI in
the educational process and further customization of the study programs are vitally important for
developing professional competencies of the specialists in translation and applied (computational)
linguistics.

In Uzbekistan, at the undergraduate level, English is largely taught to students of non-
philological disciplines such as the ones related to science and social science courses. The
teaching here is largely ‘conventional’ in some sort of grammar-translation format. There is a
need to create materials that are interactive in orientation and preferably as per the practices of
ESP English for Specific Purposes. This paper will highlight the teaching method followed and
the materials which were in consonance with theory and practices of ESP.
