the constellation of things that have led to a given result. Provided that
one has adequate familiarity with
and understanding of events, this
works perfectly well for interpreting the past. It does, however, limit one’s
ability to predict the future with any degree of specificity. While one can
be certain that future events will likewise be subject to karmic logic, there
is no way to project how that logic will be manifest. There is no pattern
of events in which event type A inevitably produces result type B. In other
words, a hermeneutics of karmic causality primarily functions by look-
ing backward. It allows for the identification of patterns in the past and
guarantees that there will continue to be patterns in the future, but it does
not reveal the forms those patterns will take.
This works well for writings such as the earlier
Mirrors
, both of which
seek to reveal to the reader the chains of cause and effect that have re-
sulted in the events of the narrative present. In each of these earlier works,
it is the existence of the pattern that needs to be proven. In the case of
