Effect of Damping on The Seismic Performance of Seismic-Base-Isolated Buildings Equıpped With Dampers
Each year destructive earthquakes cause extensive damage and loss of human life in Turkey and around the globe. Vibration-sensitive equipment housed in strategically critical facilities, which has to function during and right after the earthquakes, such as hospitals, laboratories, and data collection centers should particularly be protected from the hazardous effects of earthquakes. Use of seismic isolation and passive dampers could be an effective method in protecting such strategically important buildings. In this thesis, three and five story prototype structures are analyzed in order to examine to what extent the floor accelerations, which may cause harm to vibration-sensitive equipment, could be reduced via use of seismic isolation and passive dampers in the superstructure. In this context, a total of 340 linear and nonlinear time history analyses are performed under different earthquake excitations in an effort to understand how the floor accelerations are distributed along the height of seismically isolated structures; to what levels the floor accelerations can be reduced by increasing the damping in the isolation system; and whether the floor accelerations can be reduced further by using passive dampers in the superstructure instead of using passive dampers at the isolation level. In the bi-directional time history analyses North-South and East-West components of the 1940 El Centro, the 1952 Taft, the 1995 Kobe, the 1989 Loma Prieta, and the 1994 Sylmar eartquakes are used. The parameters that are taken into account in this study include isolation damping, isolation period, superstructure damping, and different types of linear and nonlinear isolation systems. The results are presented in comparison to fixed-base structures.
