PROBLEM OF SEMANTIC AND COMMUNICATIVE
ADEQUACY IN TRANSLATION
(On the basis of translations from English into Azerbaijani) 
SUMMARY 
Translation has always been regarded as the main channel for 
disseminating works of art, literature, and culture. The present dissertation 
covers almost all the debates, approaches and theories which tried to deal 
with the issue of the source or target-language oriented translation. The 
problem of adequacy has been analysed through both semantic and 
communicative translation theories. The proper choice of the pieces of 
literature in terms of the time of translation (Moon in the Ground (1985), 
Catcher in the Rye (1990), Nineteen Eighty-Four (2011)) and the 
approaches adopted by the translators due to some ideological 
circumstances allowed us to restate the fact that the notion of adequacy 
cannot only be regarded at the level of textual elements, but also with the 
inclusion of the social, cultural, and ideological factors.
The first chapter specifies the essence of the semantic translation 
theory. The notion of the adequacy from the viewpoint of the semantic 
translation theory, as well as different linguistic approaches to adequacy 
has been analysed. This chapter touches upon the history of translations 
from English into Azerbaijani and shows some shortcomings in translations 
of English and American literary works from Russian due to lack of access 
to the original ones. 
The second chapter is devoted to the problem of communicative 
adequacy, translator’s approach to translation, and the choice of strategy 
conditioned by certain ideological factors. The application of domesticating 
strategy to communicative translations and the concept of retranslation and 
its motives have been touched upon in this chapter as well.
The conclusion draws out the outcomes of comparative studies with a 
strong emphasis on the need for the further researches in order to analyse 
the translations in terms of adequacy limited due to the ideological 
adaptations, cultural untranslatability, and such other factors.
