3. Codes of ethics are formalized rules and standards that describe what a company expects of its employees.
Codes of ethics should provide guidelines and principles that can help employees achieve objectives and address risks in an acceptable and legal way.
4. Ethics programs should include a means through which employees can report observed misconduct anonymously.
5. Whistleblowing occurs when an employee exposes an employer’s wrongdoing to outsiders, such as the media or government regulatory agencies.
Businesses usually encourage employees to report illegal and unethical practices internally so they can take steps to remedy problems before they result in legal action or negative publicity.
The current trend is to move away from legally based initiatives in organizations to cultural- or integrity-based initiatives that make ethics a part of core organizational values.

Managers today must consider the consequences of their actions on the environment as a part of their social responsibility. One area of concern is the controversial business practice of animal testing for cosmetics and drugs. Business practices that harm endangered wildlife and their habitats are another environmental issue.

Businesses must also be concerned with their contributions to air, water, and land pollution as a result of their operations.
