1.1 Reading #3:
The Scientific Method 
Is it a precise and exact way that all science must be done? Or is it a series of steps that most scientists 
generally follow, but may be modified for the benefit of an individual investigation? 
The Scientific Method 
There are fundamental ways that science as a whole acquires knowledge. Scientific study is at the core 
of science and is carried out via the scientific method. The scientific research is a strategy for posing problems 
and putting potential solutions to the test. The steps shown in Figure 2 are frequently followed. But in practice, 
things don't always proceed in a straight path.

conducting a scientific inquiry, scientists frequently create their own procedures to follow. 
 
Making Observations 
Observations are frequently the first step in scientific research. Anything noticed by the senses — sight, 
hearing, touch, smell, and taste—is an observation. You constantly notice things. Let's imagine you go for a 
trip in the woods and spot a moth sitting on a tree trunk, like the one in the Figure below. You observe that 
the moth has eye-like markings on its wings. You believe that the moth's eyespots resemble an owl's face.
