Making Observations
Observations are frequently the first step in scientific research. Anything noticed by the senses — sight,
hearing, touch, smell, and taste—is an observation. You constantly notice things. Let's
imagine you go for a
trip in the woods and spot a moth
sitting on a tree trunk, like the one in the Figure below.
You observe that
the moth has eye-like markings on its wings. You believe that the moth's eyespots resemble an owl's face.
