The purpose of the research work is to establish and study the functional and pragmatic factors contributing to the use of phraseological units in discourse. In our opinion, the study of the functional and pragmatic conditionality of the use of phraseological units allowed us to present a complete, from the point of view of the anthropological approach, picture of the functioning of phraseological units in discourse.
In accordance with the goal, the thesis solves such tasks as:
1) a description of the semiotic characteristics of the phraseological units;
2) the study of the cognitive aspects of the meaning of phraseological units;
3) analysis of the pragmatic - communicative parameters of phraseological units in context - discursive conditions;
4) the study of text-forming functions of phraseological units.
The object of this research work was the case of phraseological unit, which includes 47 units that are actively functioning in modern English
The material for the research work was the authentic materials of modern English and American authors, internet resources and phraseological dictionaries.
The research work is based on the principle of anthropocentrism. According to this principle, the main factor regulating the development and functioning of idiomatics, as well as the nature of its units, is the human factor in language.
The tasks set, as well as the language specificity of the object of study, determined the use of the following linguistic research methods in the work:
- the method of phraseological analysis;
- the method of phraseological description;
- interpretative method;
- the linguistic experiment method;
The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that for the first time FUs are analyzed, differing both from the traditional etymological or diachronic description, and from the heuristic procedures adopted in the research of phraseological taxonomy. Combining the scientific concept of phraseological units as a sign of expression with the data on its discursive distribution, we get a research procedure that can answer many questions about the place of phraseological unit in the language picture of the world and its discursive position.
