In the more developed countries ,the  alkyl  phenol – based  chemical compounds   are  used directly or as chemical 

intermediates in the production of variety of resins, durable surface coatings, varnishes, wire enamels,printing inks, surface 

active agents, rubber chemicals, antioxidants,plastics, paints, fungicides, petroleum additives, ultraviolet absorbers and heat 

stabilizers for polymeric materials . 

Acetophenones can be obtained by a  variety  of  methods. Friedel – Crafts  acylation  of  aromatic  compounds  is  one  

of  the  most  important  synthesis  of  acetophenones. The  use  of  inorganic  solid  supported  reagents  or  solid  acid   as  

a  catalyst , resulting  in  higher  selectivity , easier  work – up  and  environmentally  safe  reactions . 

This  thesis is about  the  study  of  2-hydroxy-5-(1-methylcyclopentyl)   and   2-hydroxy-5- ( 1-methylcyclohexyl )-

acetophenones from   the  acylation  reaction  of     p-(1- methylcyclopentyl)-  and  p- ( 1- methylcyclohexyl)-phenols with  

acetic  acid  in the peresence of   ZnCl

2

 catalyst . 



The mixture of 16.5 grams (0.27mole) of glacial acetic acid and 16.5 grams (0.12 mole ) of ZnCl

2

 was added into a 150 



ml three-necked round bottom flask with a stirrer, a refluxing condensation pipe and a ventilation pipe .The mixture was 

heated up to 100 

0

C and slowly 0.1 mol para(1-methylcycloalkyl)-phenol was added to the mixture .The reaction was  



carried  out between 120-160

0

C for between 20 to 60 minutes . Then the mixture was washed with aqueous solution of HCl 



and at low pressure the mixture was distillated. At the end the products was washed with ethyl alcohol. At the end of the 

procedure white solid crystals was got. 

The reaction  scheme is  shown  below. 

 

After the fractional distillation in the vacuum of the product, IR and H-NMR spectra were recorded and the chemical 



structure and the physical properties were determined.  

The compounds which we synthesized was used as a light stabilizer in polystyrene and we obtained successful results .
