Blood pressure goals (targets) — The ultimate goal of antihypertensive therapy is a
reduction in cardiovascular events. The higher the absolute cardiovascular risk, the more
likely it is that a patient will benefit from a more aggressive blood pressure goal. However,
although cardiovascular events generally decrease with more intensive lowering of blood
pressure, the risk of adverse effects, cost, and patient inconvenience increase as more
medication is added. (See
