The present paper focuses on three hierarchically structured school systems: Government schools
(at the lowest end of the hierarchy and following the State Board of Education), private schools
(in the middle of the hierarchy and also following the State Board of Education) and the CBSE
schools (at the top, and following the Central Board of Education). The paper will attempt to
analyze English teaching in these schools from the perspective of certain relevant variables like
communicative activities, teaching materials, motivation and attitudes of students towards
English language, etc, and discuss their impact on the proficiency of the students.
