In perhaps the most dramatic example of the
prioritization of office over biography, the entire work closes with the sin-
gularly nondramatic return of the ousted sixth shogun, Munetaka, to
the capital. The minimalist entry for Bun’ei 3 (1266).7.20 simply reads:
“
Kanoe-inu
. Clear skies. At the hour of the Dog, the former shogun re-
turned to the capital and went to the residence of the Commissioner of
the Imperial Bodyguards of the Left, Captain Lord (H
ō
j
ō
) Tokishige
[1241–70], in Rokuhara.”

The reader is left with no information on the
remaining eight years of Munetaka’s life.
